Warner. Bros and director Patty Jenkins have decided to push Wonder Woman 1984‘s release date from June to August 14th. It was previously reported that the film could go to streaming, and in Kernel’s coverage of that report we stated it was very unlikely for the film to go to streaming and we suggested it should instead move to August. Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.
On Twitter, director Patty Jenkins specifically called out the rumor saying the film was made for the big screen. She also stated that Hollywood needs to help movie theaters recover, which is very important.
Now there is a strong possibility that the virus will still be going on by then or people won’t feel comfortable returning to theaters. If that is the case, I feel Wonder Woman 1984 can’t suffer another delay and should go to streaming. But August is still a long time away and a lot can happen in that time. Here’s hoping theaters are back up and running by the time August rolls around.
As far as box office goes, at this point, it’s still pretty unclear how Wonder Woman will do. If no other big movies jump in front of it, the film could be the first huge movie of the year. Personally, after all that has happened I feel the film probably won’t get to a billion which is disappointing, but it could still do very well. Previously, Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad did good business in August so this movie could as well.
Sadly there were other casualties to the virus today as Lin Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights film has been delayed without a new release date. The film was originally set to open late June, and if I were the studio, I would release the film in either October or November because it could do well with awards. Malignant and Scoob! have also been delayed with no new release date. Personally, I would release those two movies on streaming but we shall see what happens.
