Avatar held the title of highest grossing film for 10 years, before Avengers: Endgame was able to beat it in 2019. With Endgame holding a slight lead over it, some – including the cast of the film – think the sequel may just be the one to reclaim that top spot.
In a recent interview with The National, Stephen Lang, the unforgettable antagonist of the first film – who also is set to reprise his role in Avatar 2 – was asked if it could beat Avengers: Endgame. “I expect so,” he said, and it’s plain to see why.
When you think about it, Endgame had over 20 movies and 11 years of build-up under its belt. The only thing that Avatar had going for it was its director James Cameron, who was already holding onto the title for highest grossing film of all time for the Academy Award winning Titanic. While many did not know what to expect, the film soared to popularity after it was released. and was praised for its plot and unique visuals. Because the original broke so many records (with no build up), and with over 10 years since the world has visited Pandora it’s not completely radical to assume that it’s sequel has the potential to become the next highest-grossing film of all time. Of course, time will only tell.
Avatar 2 is the next film slated to be released by Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment, alongside 3 other Avatar sequels in the works. While the plots for all of the films – including the aforementioned Avatar 2 – are being kept under wraps, we do know that original cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang are all set to return. Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for a December 17, 2021 release.
