8 min read

A good movie can entertain people, but a great movie can inspire people. When someone can take something away from a movie, whether it be a lesson or a piece of advice, that is truly special. Some movie speeches and quotes are even shown in school because of how universal and well done they are. Some movie quotes even become so iconic that they are used in everyday life, sometimes people don’t even realize those quotes are from movies. This list is the 10 best movie quotes of all time. Now, this list is not going to be filled with the most iconic quotes or phrases, but rather the best. And while it is objective, everyone can take something away and relate to the quotes on this list.

10. “Life is not a spectator sport. If watchin’ is all you’re going to do, you’re going to watch your life go by without ya” – Laverne (Hunchback of Norte-Dame)

This quote is one of Disney’s best as it is from the Hunchback of Norte-Dame. The story is all about realizing your inner -beauty and not letting what other people think of you get you down. Quasimodo is an outcast who feels like he will never be able to fit in with the rest of society. He stays alone at the top of the cathedral looking down on everybody else. There he meets talking Gargoyles, one of them named Laverne tries to raise Quasimodo’s spirits. This quote is so powerful because it applies to so many people even today. So many people stay on the sidelines because they feel that they don’t belong. But in reality, there is a place for everyone in life, people just need to go out and find it. Life is also extremely precious and you shouldn’t wish it away. Don’t watch other people’s lives go by from a distance, because then yours will too. Just live your life the best you can.

9.“Fighting doesn’t make you a hero.” – Hippolyta (Wonder Woman)

So often when people see superhero movies they get caught up in the big action sequences and cool powers that the heroes have, but this quote reminds us that it’s not about that. The things that make a person a hero are on the inside. The heroes’ powers and abilities mean nothing if they aren’t fighting for what’s right. Being a hero is about sacrifice, helping others, standing up for what is right, not fighting. And while Wonder Woman does do plenty of fighting in the movie, it’s not about fighting, it’s about what she’s fighting for. That’s what makes her a hero.

8. “No one ever made a difference by being like everybody else.” – P. T Barnum (The Greatest Showman)

The Greatest Showman was a surprise hit for many reasons. The music was very popular, it had high profile actors, but most of all it had a great message. The message being you shouldn’t try and do what everyone else is doing, instead, do your own thing. So many people, especially younger kids try so hard to fit in and just follow everyone else. When in reality the people who become really successful in life are the ones that forge their own path. In the movie, Barnum and his crew are mocked because they are different, but then they end up becoming really popular. Being different isn’t a bad thing, sometimes it can be your greatest strength.

7. “It’s not about how much we lost. It’s about how much we have left.” – Tony Stark (Avengers: Endgame)

Life is tough, sometimes you lose. Losing can be very overwhelming and can sometimes consume people. Especially after a big loss, it can seem like you lost everything, and that it’s all over. This quote reminds us that no matter how much we lose, it will never be everything. It’s better to focus on what you do have instead of what you don’t. Sometimes what’s done is done, what’s lost is lost, and all you can do is cherish what you do have. Or better yet, who you have. After you lose people in your life it can feel like your all alone, but you need to realize that you have a lot left. Always appreciate life and be grateful for what you’re given. It’s a matter of half glass full or half glass empty, and it’s always good to be optimistic.

6. “It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices.” – Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter)

The Harry Potter franchise is filled with powerful quotes and advice, however, this one really stands out. Dumbledore is very wise and offers Harry some great words of wisdom that can also be applied to everyday life. This quote is important because often people try so hard to be the strongest, or the smartest, or the prettiest, but they forget what it truly means to be a good person. No matter how skilled you are, if you aren’t a good person you will not far in life. Sometimes people think they are invincible and they can do anything they want because they have a lot of skill. This leads people to make bad decisions that can end up with pretty serious consequences.

5. “Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn’t mean they’re lost forever.” – Charles Xavier (X-Men: Days of Future)

This quote is incredibly important simply because people make mistakes. Sometimes good people make bad decisions and lose their way, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be brought back. Everyone makes mistakes, some more serious than others, but that doesn’t make them a bad person. People can get lost, but sometimes all they need is a friend who can guide them and show them the way. When people are going through bad times that’s when they need help the most. You shouldn’t abandon a person because they make a mistake or are going through a hard time, but rather show them the way. Also, everyone deserves a second chance. Even if it seems the person is beyond redemption and can never make up for what they did, people can change.

4. “Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter.” – Cady (Mean Girls)

Means Girls is a hilarious movie with some surprisingly insightful messages. The way characters treat each other in the movie is obviously exaggerated for comedic effect, but it is rooted in reality. A lot of people who feel insecure about themselves try to tear others down in order to feel better. This is not a good thing to do because in the end it really just makes things worse. It ends up becoming a vicious cycle of people who bully others to build themselves up. In reality, when we feel bad we should get help from people instead of contributing to the hate. Just like this quote says criticizing others won’t make you any better. This happens a lot with younger people, but also online. There is an immense amount of online hate which is a real problem, because while you may be anonymous and even if you don’t mean it, what you say can have serious effects on people. So we should all try to choose positivity and build people up rather than tear them down.

3. “The night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.” – Harvey Dent (The Dark Knight)

The Dark Knight is regarded by many as one of the best comic book movies of all time. The movie is full of iconic quotes and one-liners, but this one really sticks out. This quote works great in the context of the movie, but it can also be applied to everyday life. At one point almost everyone hits rock bottom and it seems like things will never get better. But even though you can’t always see it, you need to trust that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Because as long as you keep going in the right direction, things can always get better. Tough times are inevitable, but it is our ability to fight through those hard times that determine our success. As this quote states success often comes after adversity, and sometimes all you can do is hold out hope.

2. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

One of the most iconic movie quotes of all time from one of the most iconic movies of all time, this simple quote is rather brilliant. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a classic 80s movie from legendary director John Hughes is packed with some great life lessons. Most of all being that you shouldn’t sweat the small things, but rather just go with the flow and enjoy life. Social norms can be straining, get good grades in school, go to college, get a good-paying job, start a family, but people forget the purpose of life. The purpose of life isn’t just to complete a series of tasks, but to enjoy and have a good time. It’s about the journey, not the destination. It’s easy to get caught up in the small thing which can cause a lot of stress, but it’s important to remember nothing in life is worth doing if it doesn’t bring you joy. And sometimes that means slowing down and taking everything in.

1.“Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life, but it ain’t how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” – Rocky (Rocky Balboa)

Rocky is one of the most famous movie characters of all time and his movies are packed with valuable life lessons. This quote is from the 2006 film Rocky Balboa but it really sums up that whole franchise. And even though it is sports-related, this quote can apply to everyday life. The truth is, no matter how tough you are, how smart you are, how strong you are, you are going to get knocked down. But just because you get knocked down, doesn’t mean you have to stay there. It doesn’t matter who you are, life is going to test you. You’re going to lose, people are going to say no to you, life will take things from you, and eventually, you’ll be on the verge of giving up. And when you are on the verge of giving up you are faced with two choices, give up, or keep fighting. And if you give up, that’s it, but as long as you keep fighting and don’t give in, there is always a chance.
