In honor of the new live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp debuting on Disney Plus, its time to meet the cast. This latest Disney remake stars Justin Theroux, Tessa Thompson, Janelle Monae, Benedict Wong, and a lot more well-known actors. However, you may not know the two biggest stars of the movie, and that’s Rose and Monte. Rose plays the role of Lady and Monte plays the role of Tramp. Why haven’t you heard of Rose and Monte before? Why that’s because they are actually dogs.
Unlike Dinsey’s recent live-action remakes such as The Jungle Book and The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp used a mix of real animals and CGI to bring its characters to life. Rose, is an American cocker spaniel and a hunting dog from Texas. Monte is a mix of schnauzer and shepherd. Furthermore, Rose and Monte are actually both rescue dogs. Monte was found in Phoenix, Ariz, while Rose was found in Texas with a family that was looking to re-home her. Both dogs have now found homes through the trainers who helped with the movie.
The two dogs reportedly had great chemistry on set and became really close. Rose and Monte even attended special events for the movie, as well as took a trip to Disney land. The training started with simple commands and then moved on to more complex actions. The trainers used bacon to help the dogs with their scenes and to perform tasks. The dogs acted out many of the scenes in the movie, even the iconic dinner scene.
The scene of the two dogs slurping spaghetti and then accidentally kissing took reportedly three days to film. At first, the scene was attempted with real pasta, however it kept breaking, so the crew then switched over to dried licorice soaked in chicken broth. The licorice worked so well that the dogs really did eat until their snouts touched. The trainer even secretly taught Monte to push a meatball over to Rose’s plate.
Lady and the Tramp directed by Charlie Bean, starring Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux is available now only on Disney Plus.
