2 min read

Sony has confirmed that it has begun production on the sequel to the widely acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The original 2018 hit wowed audiences with spectacular visuals along with a unique style never seen before in movies, helping it to earn an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best animation, so it was only a matter of time before Sony quickly greenlit a sequel.

It was widely loved because of its down-to-earth themes, such as teamwork and self-discovery, something everyone can relate to. Therefore, the hype for the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is building fast, with audiences eager to see our favourite web-slinging hero back on the big screen as soon as possible. Lead animator at Sony Imageworks, Nick Kondo, has posted on Twitter indicating his excitement to start working on the movie.

He also posted a promotional gif, sparking fans’ anticipation for this long-awaited sequel to hit theatres. There have already been upcoming rumours as to what will happen in the sequel. The CEO of Sony, Amy Pascal, had this to say

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 will centre around Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy’s romance inbetween two universes.”

This was originally hinted at during the first movie, with the two sharing slightly awkward teen moments, building a relationship between them. Fans of Spider-Man are demanding to see some crossovers from other live-action films, such as the addition of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and fan favourite, Tom Holland.

In addition to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, there are also plans in place by Sony to deliver a female-led spinoff, possibly with Spider-Gwen, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, as the lead protagonist. Steinfeld was asked about an update on this spinoff movie, but she implied that there hasn’t been much to hear so far. With any luck, all will be revealed soon.
