As we all know, the entertainment industry is as low as ever economically due to the COVID-19 pushing back release dates and production schedules. Also keeping in mind that a lot of people are in self quarantine they don’t go to the movies as often as before.
Despite all this, Sonic the Hedgehog has managed to earn just enough this weekend to beat Detective Pikachu as the highest grossing video game film domestically.
Right now, Sonic the Hedgehog has earned $145.8 million domestically, compare that to Detective Pikachu which earned $144.1 million. It’s massive success could also be due to the redesign the character had mid-production and pushed the release date a lot. Maybe fans just wanted to see if the redesign was worth this much waiting, after all, Sonic had a massive buzz because of it.
Sonic the Hedgehog however is still behind world-wide having earned $306.5 million compared to Detective Pikachu’s $433 million. Of course this is mainly due to the release date of Sonic the Hedgehog being pushed back in China and people in Europe not really able to go to a movie theater.
A Sonic the Hedgehog sequel could be in the cards for Paramount given its unexpected hit at the Box Office. We got a glimpse at a posible cinematic universe in the post credits scene and Paramount may go for it. Who knows, maybe a Nintendo cinematic universe could be the next big thing to hit the theater.
