As America seems to have flattened the COVID-19 curve, states have slowly begun lifting lockdown orders. Movie theater chains are beginning to follow suit, as restrictions on non-essential businesses that encourage large gatherings are no longer in place in certain states. It is reported that 200 theaters will soon reopen. In March, AMC, Regal and Cinemark closed all of their locations nationwide and thees major chains intent to remain closed until later in the Summer.
In this current cultural climate, drive-in movie theaters are making a comeback, due to increased importance on social distancing. 150 of the 200 reopening theaters are drive-in theaters. Nearly half of the drive-in theaters int he country are reopening; not to mention all of the new drive-in locations currently being built. The drive-in business has seen a significant increase in profitability as they allow families to enjoy the film experience from the comfort and safety of their own vehicles. One theater in Montclair CA has reported an increase of 193%. 50 traditional theaters will also be reopening in several states.
While some theaters will be reopening, no new tentpole movies are set to release until July with Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Disney’s latest live-action remake Mulan. It is still possible that Mulan can be pushed back once again and that Tenet could delay until later in awards season.
