Sony Pictures has confirmed they are working with veteran TV director S. J. Clarkson to helm an untitled Marvel film. Little is known about the film at this time including what comic character she would be adapting for the big screen. Some rumors have surfaced that she will adapt a version of Madame Web, but Sony refused to comment. It is expected that Clarkson will follow in the footsteps of Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Anna Boden (Captain Marvel), Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey), and Cate Shortland (Black Widow) and will direct a female led comic book adaptation, so other Sony properties could include Spider-Woman, or Black Cat. Sony has had a Silver and Black movie set to star Black Cat in production hell since Andrew Garfield was their leading man.
Madame Web seems to be the property gaining the most traction at the time. Cassandra Webb is a victim of myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease that has rendered her invalid, blind and requiring the aide of a life support system resembling a spider’s web. Madame Web has psychic sensory powers including telepathy, clairvoyance, and prescience to name a few. She also has the ability to grant her powers to another host upon her death. To quote Deadpool in Deadpool 2, “That’s not very cinematic,” so if the rumors are true, it will be interesting to see how they adapt the character for the big screen.
If they are able to get the project of the ground, this would be Clarkson’s first film credit as a director. She has previously worked on big budget tv shows such as The Defenders , Jessica Jones, Heroes, Dexter, Orange is the New Black, and Life on Mars. She was also tabbed by HBO to direct the pilot of their since cancelled untitled Game of Thrones prequel series.
