“All my life I wanted to be a writer…”
So I was doomed from the start, right? My name is Rhys Turner, though I so prefer my social media handle (RhysehT) that I’ve given regular thought to legally changing it. I’ve been with Kernel since the beginning (a big shout out to James for bringing me on board), and whilst I might not be the most prolific film journalist here I can assure you I love me a movie review. I’m a blog supervisor so I write articles as well as approve news written by the rest of the team.
Where are you from?
Deepest, darkest, small-town South Wales. I literally live opposite a farm.
What’s your earliest movie memory?
About a year ago I found out that the first film I ever saw in the cinema was Toy Story, and whilst I wish I could remember that my first memory is running through my grandmother’s house, terrified by Jurassic Park. I think.
What are your top 5 movies?
Like a lot of people who care enough about movies to write about them, Star Wars largely got me where I am today, but my favourites from one to five – at least right now – are Moneyball (the world’s greatest baseball film); Interstellar (the most mind-bending cinema trip I’ve ever been on); The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (home of Ecstasies of Gold, the greatest piece of film score in history); Kill Bill (The Whole Bloody Affair – it should be outlawed to watch one volume without the other); and Space Jam (which, if I’m being honest, is probably the real number one). Tragically, I’ve only ever seen two of these films on the big screen.
What’s a movie trailer that you love?
The second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (and the accompanying Celebration panel) proved to be enough of a spiritual experience that I collapsed to the floor with joy. Luckily I was home alone at the time and no-one saw, which makes you wonder why I’m choosing to now reveal this to the entire internet.
What’s a movie related collection you’re proud of?
Working in a cinema for a decade (ish) has resulted in a collection of posters that takes up far too much space for me to say I’m proud of it, but I do have a wide assortment of movie tickets that’s a lot easier to store; when it comes to cinema-going I’m something of a marathon man, and have kept almost every ticket for the best part of six years now. For some reason, I enjoy dedicating hours of my free time collating them into annual social media posts like this one:
What are some of your best articles on the Kernel blog?
You never forget your first, and my first film review here for Shazam! is no exception. I’m also particularly proud of my review for Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood and the feedback it got, and have recently enjoyed pushing myself to watch and review films outside of my preferred cinema setting, like Blow The Man Down and Trolls World Tour.
Where can people find you?

Instagram – for dog photos and a well-travelled peace sign ✌️
Blogspot – for film opinions sparsely written in the years B.K. (Before Kernel)
YouTube – if you fancy watching a short documentary I worked on five years ago
