Star Wars’ first confirmation of LQBTQ+ characters in The Rise of Skywalker with a same sex kiss had some backlash, with Disney cutting the scene in the Singaporean version of the film and the mixed reactions from fans. However, this is a stepping stone which was needed to expand the LGBTQ+ community in the franchise, and even movies in general.
It seems that in addition to the current, but not so apparent LGBTQ+ characters in the MCU – Tessa Thompson has confirmed that Valkyrie, as King of Asgard, ‘needs to find her Queen’ – Phase 4 will bring a transgender character to the screen.
At a New York Film Academy Q&A event, Kevin Feige was asked whether we will see more LGBTQ+ characters in the upcoming MCU films, and he replied “Yes, absolutely yes.” He then confirmed that a transgender character will be joining the MCU “very soon, in a movie that we’re shooting right now.”
Fan speculation has led to the conclusion that the character could well be Sera, Marvel’s only trans superhero, in Thor: Love and Thunder. In the meantime, The Eternals will bring us the MCU’s first openly gay character, Phastos, in November of this year.
