You read that right. Everyone’s favourite gungan will be returning for the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series. But he will in fact have a beard, likely to show age and that he is a bit ‘rough around the edges’ so to speak, since Palpatine’s deception and the downfall of the republic.
While filming hasn’t started yet, early CGI has begun and this news is all but confirmed. We hope that Ahmed Best will return to play Binks, despite the negative reaction fans gave his character in the prequels. Jar Jar just isn’t the same without him. It is also rumoured (and fairly probable) that Kenobi and Binks will reminisce about the past. Before the dark times.
We can expect much improved CGI of Jar Jar in the series – remember Revenge of the Sith when we last saw him was 15 years ago! The return of the prequel characters is a nice move from Disney, and if done well could improve the prequel trilogy’s reputation slightly (and Jar Jar’s!) so let’s just hope they do it right. It also entices ex Star Wars fans back into the franchise, as it’s no secret that the new films have caused the galaxy far far away to lose quite a few original/prequel die hards.
Bringing back an old and beloved character (maybe Kenobi more so than Jar Jar) subsequently brings back the people who loved and grew up with them, and a lot of Star Wars fans will probably purchase Disney+ for this series alone, making it not only good fan service but a clever move on Disney’s part financially.
Personally I am really looking forward to the Obi-Wan series, more than I looked forward to The Mandalorian and perhaps even recent Star Wars films (and there’s no doubt I’m the only one). Obi-Wan is one of my favourite characters and the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope is one I’ve been wanting to see filled since I first watched the two films, and one which I thought Rogue One would fill a lot better than it did back in 2016. While I enjoyed it to an extent, I don’t think it focused on what I personally wanted explained and I hope this series will do just that.
