A fourth installment of the Star Trek franchise is on its way with a brand new director. Noah Hawley, best known for TV’s Fargo and Legion will helm this new adventure from Paramount. Chris Pine is expected to reprise his role as Captain Kirk, along with Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana. JJ Abrams will also return to produce through his company Bad Robot. This new film will be separate from Quentin Tarintino’s Star Trek movie which is reportedly still in development.
The last Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond, opened back in July 2016. Despite solid reviews, it was a relatively weak performer at the box office grossing only around 340 million worldwide. Back in the Summer of 2018, a sequel was announced with S.J Clarkson to direct and Chris Hemsworth and Danai Gurira set to join the cast, however, it ended up being shelved.
While Noah Hawley is behind some respected television shows, overall he has a spotty track record. Just this year Hawley made his directorial debut with Lucy in the Sky, which turned out to be a commercial and critical flop. He was also behind Fox’s Doctor Doom movie which ended up getting canceled after the Disney-Fox purchase.
