Beyoncé To Release Visual Album On Disney+

1 min read

An exciting announcement for fans of Beyoncé, a brand new ‘visual album’ written, directed and produced by Beyoncé herself, will be coming to Disney+ on July 31st.

The album is titled ‘Black Is King’ and is said to be inspired by The Lion King film and the music of ‘The Lion King: The Gift’ by Beyoncé. This comes almost exactly a year after The Lion King (2019) live action adaptation was released, in which Beyoncé lent her voice as the character Nala. A teaser trailer for ‘Black Is King’ was also released on Saturday on Beyoncé’s website.

The visual album will feature guest appearances from the likes of Childish Gambino, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tekno and many, many more. This isn’t the only surprise announcement by Beyoncé recently, as her and Jay-Z dropped a co-written single called ‘BLACK PARADE’ on Juneteenth. This centered on the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests which began after the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

Disney and Parkwood Entertainment said the following when announcing the visual album:

“Black Is King is a celebratory memoir for the world on the black experience. The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future.”

When discussing the plot, they then went on to say:

“The album re-imagines lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns. It tells the story of a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through black voices of today, now sitting in their own power.

Although, for viewers who may be interested by this, Disney+ has recently taken away the offer of a seven day free trial. This is most likely in preparation for Hamilton, which arrives on Disney+ July 3rd. Therefore you’ll have to have a subscription if you are to enjoy this much anticipated Disney+ original.
