After the recent worldwide box office record set by Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios has another big win. Spider-Man: Far From Home has as of today grossed over 1 billion dollars worldwide, making it the first Spider-Man film to do so! That means that all of the MCU films released this year (Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home) have grossed over 1 billion dollars worldwide.
The reason that this is important, is because of the fact that it was rumoured that Spider-Man: Far From Home had to gross over a billion dollars worldwide in order for Sony to renew their deal with Marvel Studios.
For those who didn’t know, Sony Pictures still holds the film rights for all of the Spider-Man characters. In 2015, after the failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony made a deal with Marvel Studios to share Spider-Man with them so that he and his rogues gallery could be introduced into the MCU.
That deal expired with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home and Sony and Marvel now need to renegotiate. With the success of both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, we should expect a renewal and many more Spider-Man MCU films! For those who have seen Spider-Man: Far From Home, we can expect an exciting story to come for Spidey especially with THAT post credit scene.
Perhaps we can also expect Tom Hardy’s Venom to pop up in an MCU film? Or Miles Morales’ Spider-Man? Time will tell, but for now the future seems bright for our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man!
