🎭 The Greatest Showman 2 – Why we need it?

It’s hard to believe that the first installment to this musical masterpiece was released in December 2017; it has gone so quick and yet the movie still feels so current. Directed by Michael Gracey in his first feature directional debut, starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Zendaya. The story follows the inspirational story of P.T. Barnum’s creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The circus was made defunct in May 2017 but originally founded way back in April, 1871. Jackman who plays the lead role of P.T. Barnum was an American showman and businessmen who’s risk taking life choices led him to create and star in the very successful and long running circus show.

Now we said the movie was a musical so if for some reason you haven’t yet seen the film the songs are very much more famous than the movie itself. The movie feature 9 songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land) where that movie won an Academy Award. The soundtrack for the movie was released in March 2018 and it became only the second album within 30 years to achieve an amazing 11 consecutive weeks at the number 1 spot of the UK Album Chart; only equalling the previous record set by Adele for her album 21. 

With the album being so popular and I n the charts across the world and even now it’s still very high up in charts on streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify. A remix album was released in November 2018 called The Greatest Showman: Reimagined featuring songs from stars known all over the world such as Panic! At the Disco, Kelly Clarkson, Ty Dolla Sign and P!nk. While not as successful as the movie soundtrack, the album charted well with a UK Compilation Album Chart peak at number 1, a US Billboard 200 position of 3 and a Gold certification in the UK.

Another development since the movie has been released is the talk of a stage show. Now with the popularity of fellow musical Mamma Mia garnering similar success back in 2008. Mamma Mia is currently on the West End and Broadway which obviously takes inspiration from the band ABBA and the movie itself. According to BroadwayWorld, Hugh Jackman, has stated when asked about a possible sequel said that “For an actor, I’m a bad liar… I have heard talk about it. But I don’t know.” This doesn’t confirm but it does show that the live-action stage show is in talks along with the sequel.

Sticking with Hugh Jackman and if you’ve been living under a rock he’s been on a music tour. Yes your beloved Logan has been signing on stage to hundreds of thousands. The Man. The Music. The Show opened in May 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland and featured material from The Greatest Showman, Broadway and many Hollywood musical masterpieces. The tour is comprised of 89 shows in North America, Europe and Oceania and will end October 2019.

It goes without saying that the Greatest Showman is one of the most successful musical movies ever produced. While it doesn’t rank high in the box office figures, it has definitely got a commercial backing behind it. There is so much going on in the world of The Greatest Showman do they even have the time for a sequel? NME believe that a sequel is in the works after Hugh Jackman apparently has confirmed it to be so.
